Starkey Elementary

Summary:

Starkey Elementary is a public elementary school in Kerrville, Texas, serving 467 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Kerrville Independent School District, which is ranked 270 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Starkey Elementary has a higher percentage of White students (53.96%) compared to nearby schools like Nimitz Elementary (39.19%) and Daniels Elementary (50.55%). The school's performance on STAAR tests has been mixed, with strengths in 4th and 5th grade reading but struggles in 3rd grade reading and math. Starkey's ranking and rating have fluctuated between 3 and 4 stars on the SchoolDigger scale over the years. The school excels in its Gifted and Talented program, ranking in the top 5% of Texas elementary schools, but lags behind in supporting its Hispanic and English Language Learner subgroups.

Compared to other schools in the Kerrville ISD, Starkey performs on par or slightly below. However, it outperforms schools in nearby districts like Comfort Elementary and Center Point Elementary. The high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Starkey (55.6% to 61.67%) suggests the school serves a population with relatively low socioeconomic status, which may contribute to its academic challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote With all the emphasis on "No Child Left Behind" (emphasis on the 3 Rs), the SCIENCES WERE LEFT BEHIND. Children in elementary school have natural curiosity for how things work and this is THE perfect time to introduce the scientific method concept.

Also, the books and curriculum are unchallenging.

Starkey getting all these gold stars is fine---but our children are going to be entering a world of science and technology and incredible competition.

I personally make sure my grandchild is exposed to enormous amounts on learning experiences that I KNOW HE IS NOT RECEIVING AT STARKEY. I do this because I know he will not be capable of competing with the education from Starkey.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
