Pilgrim Academy

Summary:

Pilgrim Academy is an elementary school in Houston, Texas that serves grades PK-8, with a student population of 1,233 that is predominantly Hispanic (over 90%). Despite being part of the Houston Independent School District, which is ranked 572 out of 968 districts in Texas, Pilgrim Academy has consistently struggled with low academic performance, ranking in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools over the past 10 years.

Pilgrim Academy's academic performance is significantly below state and district averages across all grade levels and subjects, particularly in reading and mathematics. For example, the school's projected 3rd grade reading proficiency for 2023-2024 is just 22.76%, compared to the state average of 48.85% and the district average of 44.66%. The school also serves a high-need student population, with 95.7% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023. In contrast, nearby charter schools like Amigos Por Vida-Friends For Life and KIPP Sharp Prep outperform Pilgrim Academy on STAAR tests, despite serving similar high-need student populations.

Pilgrim Academy's challenges extend beyond academic performance, with the school having a relatively high student-teacher ratio of 18.6 in 2022-2023 and lower per-student spending of $9,488 in 2020-2021 compared to nearby charter schools. These resource constraints may contribute to the school's persistent low performance, which suggests deep-rooted challenges that the school has not been able to overcome. Addressing these issues will likely require a comprehensive, long-term approach to improve educational outcomes for the students at Pilgrim Academy.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The school had horrible facilities, nasty lunches, rude and disrespectful teachers, and treated the students like three year olds! The teachers would eat in class while watching a movie, and the students would just work on a packet. Some of the teachers don't even speak english! I am fairly disappointed I had to spend 5 years in this school. Moving here was a huge regret. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
