Briarmeadow Charter

Summary:

Briarmeadow Charter is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas that serves around 600 students in grades PK-8. As part of the Houston Independent School District, Briarmeadow Charter stands out for its diverse student population and strong academic performance.

Briarmeadow Charter has a more racially diverse student body compared to nearby schools, with higher percentages of White, Asian, and multi-racial students. Academically, the school consistently outperforms the Houston ISD and Texas state averages on STAAR standardized tests across multiple grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, 95.24% of 8th graders were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to just 54.09% statewide. Briarmeadow Charter also ranks highly for its performance with certain student subgroups, such as female students and at-risk students.

While Briarmeadow Charter has a lower percentage of free/reduced lunch recipients compared to nearby schools like Piney Point Elementary and Mark White Elementary, it still serves a significant population of economically disadvantaged students. Additionally, Briarmeadow Charter spends more per student and has a lower student-teacher ratio than the surrounding schools, which may contribute to its strong academic outcomes. Overall, Briarmeadow Charter's combination of diversity, academic excellence, and socioeconomic inclusion make it a standout public school in the Houston Independent School District.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Briarmeadow is a fantastic school with a dedicated force of an administration at it's head. Students are challenged academically as well as socially and personally. My daughters have loved the "inquiry based" learning environment. Specifically my 6th grader noticed how many fewer "worksheets" she did upon moving here compared to her previously (also good) school. Instead she is asking, writing, thinking, researching and even creating websites as school assignments. The population is diverse and beautifully peaceful as the school focuses on IB qualities and stresses social growth and being a "world citizen" to all of the students. If you are fortunate enough to get a spot at this school...take it!!! The education is as good as you could ask for and environment just what we all want for our growing students. We are a family of educators (husband college professor) and know a great school when we see it. Yay BCS!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
