North Shore Senior High

Summary:

North Shore Senior High is a public high school located in Houston, Texas, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 4,569 students. The school is part of the Galena Park Independent School District (ISD), which is ranked 369 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

North Shore Senior High has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas high schools, ranging from 881 out of 1,797 schools (2017-2018) to 1,265 out of 1,861 schools (2020-2021), with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school performs relatively better in certain student subgroups, such as Asian students and African American students, but struggles with lower rankings for Hispanic students and White students. North Shore Senior High has seen a decline in its four-year graduation rate, from 92.1% in 2020-2021 to 86.6% in 2022-2023, which is lower than the state average and several nearby schools, such as Galena Park Independent School District (ISD) Career & Technical ECHS, which had a 98.9% four-year graduation rate in 2022-2023.

Compared to nearby schools, North Shore Senior High performs significantly worse than Galena Park Independent School District (ISD) Career & Technical ECHS, which consistently ranks in the top 20% of Texas high schools and has much higher graduation rates, lower dropout rates, and better STAAR EOC test scores. Other nearby schools, such as KIPP Northeast College Preparatory and Channelview High School, also outperform North Shore Senior High in various metrics. The school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students may be a contributing factor to these issues, and targeted interventions and support for struggling student subgroups, as well as a focus on addressing socioeconomic barriers, may be necessary to improve the school's performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I met some great young people who seemed to have goals set for themselves. I'm very proud to hear that coming from young people. Even speaking with the middle schoolers, they too seem to focused on school. Although many love football, the no pass no play is a great motivation for them to stay on top while in school. The staff seem to stay positive as well. Everyone always seems approachable and acceptance to communicating with their students. Glad to see a school care about its students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
