Cj & Anne Hyman Elementary

Summary:

Cj & Anne Hyman Elementary is a public elementary school in Dallas, Texas, serving 456 students in grades PK-4. The school is part of the Duncanville Independent School District, which is ranked 889 out of 968 districts in Texas and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Cj & Anne Hyman Elementary faces significant academic challenges, with consistently low performance on statewide assessments and rankings compared to other Texas elementary schools. The school's student population is predominantly African American (46.05%) and Hispanic (45.18%), and 76.75% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending compared to nearby schools, the school's academic performance remains significantly below state and district averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 29.49% of 3rd-grade students were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 48.85% statewide and 27.04% in the Duncanville ISD.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the Duncanville ISD, such as Clint Q Smith Elementary and James R Bilhartz Junior Elementary, have similar low academic performance and rankings, suggesting a broader challenge within the district. In contrast, some nearby schools in other districts, such as Colin Powell Elementary and Garner Fine Arts Academy in the Grand Prairie ISD, have significantly higher academic performance and statewide rankings, indicating that the challenges faced by Cj & Anne Hyman Elementary may be specific to the Duncanville ISD.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote If you are a parent of a child with special needs I would not put your child in this school. My child was neglected and left in soiled clothes until I picked him up after school. One of the TA's at this school has a very bad attitude with the kids and I don't think she should be working with kids who have special needs. I witnessed how mean she was with one child who has autism. Talked to principal regarding several issues we had with her and what we had witnessed and he seemed to make excuses for her poor behavior. I would look into other schools before considering this school. I thankfully withdrew my son quickly. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
