James R Bilhartz Junior Elementary

Summary:

James R Bilhartz Junior Elementary is an elementary school in Dallas, Texas, serving 532 students in grades PK-4 as part of the Duncanville Independent School District. The school has a predominantly Hispanic (63.91%) and African American (29.89%) student population, with a small percentage of White (3.2%) and Asian (0.75%) students.

Academically, James R Bilhartz Junior Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools, with STAAR test scores significantly below state and district averages across all grade levels and subjects. The school's performance is particularly weak in STAAR Spanish assessments, and its White, Gifted and Talented, and English Language Learner student subgroups perform among the lowest in the state. However, the school's African American and Hispanic students perform relatively better compared to the overall school rankings, though still lagging behind state averages.

Interestingly, the nearby Ume Preparatory Academy and Ignite Community School - Mountain Creek, which are charter schools, generally outperform James R Bilhartz Junior Elementary and the other Duncanville Independent School District schools on academic measures, despite serving similar student populations. This suggests that there may be opportunities for the district to learn from the practices of these successful charter schools and implement effective strategies to support the academic growth of students at James R Bilhartz Junior Elementary and other district schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There's a new sheriff in town! The new principal is very motivated and student-oriented. Several of the teachers are particularly exemplary. And this school has, in fact, been rated exemplary for the past 2 years. Many out of district families are moving to the Bilhartz area just to take advantage of this fine school. Unfortunately, this has resulted in overcrowding. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
