Lakewood Elementary

Summary:

Lakewood Elementary is a public elementary school in Dallas, Texas, serving 959 students in grades K-5 and consistently ranking among the top 1% of elementary schools in the state. With exceptional academic performance, a supportive community, and a unique student demographic, Lakewood Elementary stands out as a shining example in the Dallas Independent School District (ISD).

Lakewood Elementary's academic achievements are truly remarkable. The school significantly outperforms the Dallas ISD and the state of Texas in STAAR test scores across all grade levels and subject areas, with over 90% of 3rd graders, 86% of 4th graders, and 95% of 5th graders proficient or better in reading. In mathematics, the school's performance is equally impressive, with over 80% of students in grades 3-5 achieving proficiency or higher. Lakewood Elementary also excels in STAAR Science, with 78% of 5th graders scoring proficient or better, compared to just 17.71% for the Dallas ISD and 26.29% for the state.

While Lakewood Elementary's academic excellence is undeniable, the school's demographic makeup raises questions about equity and access to high-performing schools. The school has a significantly higher percentage of White students (76.54%) compared to the district and state averages, and lower percentages of Hispanic (13.45%) and African American (1.88%) students. This contrasts with nearby schools like William Lipscomb Elementary, Dan D Rogers Elementary, and Mount Auburn STEAM Academy, which have higher percentages of minority and economically disadvantaged students and lower academic performance. This highlights the need for the Dallas ISD to address equity and ensure that all students have access to high-quality educational opportunities.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Lakewood is the best elementary school in Texas in my opinion - I base this on social and academic aspects. Grads from Lakewood go on to Newsweek Top High School Woodrow Wilson where they always rank highest in the class (with some competition from Stonewall Jackson). However, Lakewood is very much like a small town and you will find that the friends made there last a lifetime. It really is like a family. Very reassuring as time goes by to have that rock of loyal friends, Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
