Johnson Elementary

Summary:

Johnson Elementary is a public elementary school in Franklin, Tennessee, serving 247 students in grades PK-4. The school is part of the highly-ranked Franklin Special School District, which is ranked 8th out of 139 districts in the state and has a 5-star rating.

One of the key factors that sets Johnson Elementary apart is its racial diversity. The school has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with 32.79% White, 23.08% African American, 28.74% Hispanic, 8.5% Asian, and 6.88% two or more races. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by TNReady test scores, is generally lower than the surrounding schools in the Franklin Special School District. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in Mathematics was 49.4% at Johnson Elementary, compared to 55.7% for the district and 39.7% for the state of Tennessee.

Another unique aspect of Johnson Elementary is its lower student-teacher ratio of 8.5, compared to nearby schools like Moore Elementary (12.2), Liberty Elementary (11.6), and Poplar Grove K-4 (10.6). However, the school's performance has declined over the years, and its ranking has dropped from 136th out of 985 Tennessee elementary schools in 2018-2019 to 259th out of 1,008 in 2023-2024. This trend, along with the school's lower performance compared to nearby schools in the Williamson County district, suggests that further investigation and targeted interventions may be necessary to address the challenges facing Johnson Elementary.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have a kindergarten student enrolled in Johnson Elementary. I am a single mother working to establish stability in our new town and when I recently asked for some assistance in a personal matter from the school, after a few conversations with the appropriate personnel, we were able to establish what I feel was the best case scenario for my son. I appreciate the support and understanding that the administration gave us. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
