Bethel Elementary

Summary:

Bethel Elementary is a public elementary school in Clover, South Carolina, serving 340 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the highly-ranked York 02 school district, which is rated 2nd out of 75 districts in the state and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bethel Elementary consistently ranks among the top 15% of elementary schools in South Carolina, with students performing significantly better than state and district averages in English Language Arts and Mathematics across all grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, 74.5% of Bethel's 3rd graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 68.3% in the district and 53.8% statewide. The school also has impressive 4th grade science proficiency rates, with 66.7% of students scoring proficient or better in 2022-2023, compared to 69.8% in the district and 46.6% statewide. However, Bethel's student population is less diverse, with a much higher percentage of White students (75.59%) compared to the district and state averages.

Bethel Elementary also stands out for its relatively low percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 20.36% to 28.16% over the past three years, which is significantly lower than nearby schools like Larne Elementary (57.19%) and Kinard Elementary (61%). Additionally, the school spends more per student ($15,860 in 2022-2023) and has a lower student-teacher ratio (10.9 in 2022-2023) compared to the district and other nearby schools, which may contribute to its strong academic performance but also raises questions about equity in resource distribution across the district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is the type of school every parent hopes to find for their child where not only are the academics outstanding but this is a school where the teachers actually take the time to really know the kids. I researched schools a lot when we first moved to the Charlotte area before finding Bethel and could not be happier with the results. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
