Parkside Elementary School

Summary:

Parkside Elementary School is a public elementary school in Brookhaven, Pennsylvania, serving 268 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Penn-Delco School District, which is ranked 205 out of 606 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating.

Parkside stands out for its strong academic performance, outpacing the state and district averages in math, science, and English language arts proficiency. The school's diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (21.64%) and Hispanic (5.22%) students compared to nearby schools, is also noteworthy. Parkside's African American students and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds perform significantly better than their peers in the state, ranking 73rd and 424th, respectively, out of over 1,400 Pennsylvania elementary schools. This suggests that the school has effective strategies in place to support the unique needs of these student populations.

While Parkside's academic performance has been consistently strong, its ranking has declined in recent years, dropping from a high of 135th in 2013-2014 to 640th in 2022-2023. The higher spending per student at Parkside compared to the state average may be a contributing factor to the school's academic success, as it allows for smaller class sizes, more resources, and potentially better-qualified teachers. In contrast, the nearby Chester Upland School District, which includes schools like Chester Upland School of Arts and Main Street School, significantly underperforms Parkside and the state in academic measures, highlighting the stark educational disparities that can exist within a relatively small geographic area.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school used to be a very professional and organized atmosphere, but it has changed over the years. You have a lot of young, immature teachers being hired that don't know how to deal with diversity. Constant tattling to parents over every little thing to the point it becomes annoying. The recess aids get promoted to desk jobs and think they are better because they are making a few extra dollars. I don't think they realize they work for the people, and a pleasant atmosphere should show when you enter the office. This is why you hire administrative staff with administrative and customer service experience not recess aids. I would recommend this school, but if you are another race other than white please be careful. There is a lot of racism within the staff. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
