Northeast Middle School

Summary:

Northeast Middle School is a public middle school located in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, serving 725 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Bethlehem Area School District, which is ranked 451 out of 610 school districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Northeast Middle School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Pennsylvania middle schools, with a statewide ranking between 522-699 over the past 10 years. Its performance on PSSA tests is significantly below the state and district averages across all grades and subjects. The school struggles to serve its diverse student population effectively, with particularly low rankings for African American, Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Low Socioeconomic Status students. Northeast Middle School has also seen a steady increase in its dropout rates, rising from 0.8% in 2020-2021 to 1.6% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average. The school has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 66.22% to 74.62% over the past three years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When compared to other middle schools in the Bethlehem Area School District, such as East Hills Middle School and Nitschmann Middle School, Northeast Middle School consistently underperforms. Examining schools outside the district, such as Saucon Valley Middle School and Southern Lehigh Middle School, reveals stark contrasts in academic performance, with these schools consistently ranking in the top 20% of Pennsylvania middle schools and having much higher proficiency rates on PSSA tests. The high percentage of students from low-income backgrounds at Northeast Middle School likely contributes to the school's academic struggles, as research has shown that students from disadvantaged backgrounds often face additional barriers to learning.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
