Broughal Middle School

Summary:

Broughal Middle School is a public middle school in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, serving around 500 students in grades 6-8. The school faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance, a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and a large population of English Language Learners.

Broughal Middle School stands out for its high percentage of Hispanic students (70.4%), which is significantly higher than nearby schools like East Hills Middle School (6.5%) and Nitschmann Middle School (59.59%). However, the school's academic performance is consistently in the bottom quartile of Pennsylvania middle schools, with low proficiency rates in PSSA Math, Science, and English Language Arts compared to the Bethlehem Area School District and the state average. This suggests potential racial achievement gaps that need to be addressed.

Broughal Middle School also faces challenges with its high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (87.6%) and its performance with English Language Learners, ranking in the bottom 5% of Pennsylvania middle schools for this subgroup. Despite spending significantly more per student ($20,954) than nearby schools like East Hills Middle School ($16,662) and Nitschmann Middle School ($16,616), the school's academic outcomes have not improved. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive, data-driven approach to support the diverse needs of Broughal Middle School's student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is like the best school since like ever!! I love it there and all the awesome teachers! You'll probably never meet such dedicated teachers that always try their best to help you. This is my 8th grade year at Broughal and it makes me sad knowing that I'm graduating this year. Not only are the teachers the best, but so are all the students. There is always something going on and there's never a boring day at Broughal. I'm a BMS rocket forever!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
