East Knox Junior/Senior High School

Summary:

East Knox Junior/Senior High School is a public high school located in Howard, Ohio, serving grades 7-12 with a total enrollment of 415 students. The school is part of the East Knox Local School District, which is ranked 468 out of 839 districts in Ohio and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

East Knox Junior/Senior High School has a predominantly white student population, with over 94% of students identifying as white, significantly higher than the state average. The school maintains high four-year graduation rates, reaching 97.3% in the 2023-2024 school year, well above the state average. However, the school has experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 6.7% in 2019-2020 to 19.9% in 2021-2022. The school's performance on state assessments is mixed, with strengths in subjects like American History and Biology, but struggles in areas like Geometry and Algebra I, where proficiency rates are significantly lower than the state average. Additionally, the school has a relatively high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 44.1% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch.

Interestingly, the nearby Knox County Career Center, a vocational high school, has a similar racial composition to East Knox Junior/Senior High School, with over 91% of students identifying as white. However, the Career Center has a significantly lower student-teacher ratio (7:1) compared to East Knox (17.4:1), which may contribute to its ability to provide more personalized instruction. Additionally, East Knox Junior/Senior High School's performance in serving its gifted and talented, special education, and disabled student populations is an area of concern, with low rankings in these subgroups compared to other Ohio high schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Awful school. The district is behind. The graduation rate is very low. It’s not diverse at all. They don’t really care much about any programs other than football. They blame the lack of progress on an old building but there is far more to it than that. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
