Newark High School

Summary:

Newark High School is a public high school serving 1,424 students in grades 9-12 in Newark, Ohio. The school is part of the Newark City School District, which is ranked 514 out of 839 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Newark High School has a predominantly white student population, with 82.51% of students identifying as white, which is higher than the state average and the nearby Career and Technology Educational Centers, which has a more diverse student body. The school's four-year graduation rate has declined from 90.7% in 2019-2020 to 86.0% in 2023-2024, though it remains above the state average. However, Newark High School has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 17.1% in 2019-2020 to 38.8% in 2023-2024, which is a concerning trend that could impact student performance and engagement.

While Newark High School's test scores on the Ohio State Tests are generally on par with or slightly above the Newark City and state averages, there are some areas of concern, such as lower proficiency rates in Geometry and Algebra I compared to the state average. The school's performance also varies across different student subgroups, with relatively strong rankings for African American and disabled students, but lower rankings for Hispanic and multi-racial students. Nearby schools, such as the Licking Valley Online Learning School, have smaller student populations and lower graduation rates, while the Career and Technology Educational Centers has a more diverse student body and a lower student-teacher ratio compared to Newark High School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Levy after levy passed, to the benefit of the teachers and the administrators. Upgraded buildings, then tore them down and built new ones. Great teacher to student ratio, lousy liberal teachers and administrators. Students suffer! Please, DO NOT ever send your child to a Newark public school! More money and more tax levies cannot fix this! ONLY parents that refuse to send their children to substandard schools can do that! PARENTS, PLEASE STAND UP! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
