South Avondale School

Summary:

South Avondale School is an elementary school in Cincinnati, Ohio, serving 288 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Cincinnati Public Schools district, which has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

South Avondale School faces significant challenges, with consistently low academic performance, ranking in the bottom 10% of Ohio elementary schools. For example, in 2023-2024, only 12.9% of 5th-grade students were proficient in Science, compared to the state average of 64%. The school also has extremely high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 54.1% to 73.9% over the past few years, much higher than the state and district averages. The school's performance is particularly low for African American, special education, and low socioeconomic status students.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Fairview-Clifton German Language School and Clifton Area Neighborhood School, have significantly higher academic performance and lower chronic absenteeism rates, despite being part of the same district. Additionally, South Avondale School spends approximately $11,082 per student, which is higher than the spending at some of the higher-performing nearby schools, suggesting that funding and resources alone may not be the primary driver of the school's poor performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school has one of the best principals in Ohio in an elementary school. Mr.
Allison along with his staff is professional, friendly, knows his students by name, calls them Mr. & Miss and expects them to act in that manner. He walks the halls, patiently talks to parents and will dress up in a silly outfit for a school program to help the children learn as they experience the actions of a principal who really cares. The kindergarten teacher, Ms. Costanza sets a foundation for the children to build upon and is loyal to her practice. Ms. Robison, a new kindergarten teacher is an asset to the teacher profession and the holistic growth of the children. I am a parent but I have been an Adopt-A-Class coordinator for 6 years for this school and I have seen a miraculous upward change. I am also a grandmother with two children in this school as well as a community outreach coordinator for Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center Division of Pharmacy. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
