Springhurst Elementary School

Summary:

Springhurst Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Dobbs Ferry, New York, serving 695 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Dobbs Ferry Union Free School District, which is ranked 74 out of 865 school districts in New York and has a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Springhurst Elementary School consistently performs well on state assessments, with a high percentage of students proficient or better in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 76.86% of 3rd graders, 65.93% of 4th graders, and 70% of 5th graders were proficient or better in ELA, significantly outperforming the state average. In Math, 75.83% of 3rd graders, 77.1% of 4th graders, and 80.39% of 5th graders were proficient or better, again exceeding the state average. The school has maintained a strong statewide ranking, placing in the top 10-20% of New York elementary schools in recent years, and has demonstrated consistent high performance across various student subgroups. Compared to nearby schools like School 29 and School 22 in the Yonkers City School District, Springhurst Elementary School outperforms them in academic achievement, statewide ranking, and student group performance.

The relatively low percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch at Springhurst Elementary School, ranging from 11.29% to 12.66% in recent years, suggests a higher socioeconomic status of the student population compared to other schools in the area. This could be a contributing factor to the school's strong academic performance. However, while Springhurst Elementary School performs well overall, there are some disparities in the performance of certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic and English Language Learner students, indicating a need to further examine and address any equity gaps within the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Springhurst is a really caring school in a caring village. The teachers and staff are warm and welcoming and my son is happy there. I wish the classrooms could be smaller and that foreign language was offered starting in Kindergarten but overall I'm very pleased with our experience. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
