Chatham High School

Summary:

Chatham High School is a public high school located in Chatham, NY, serving grades 9-12 with a student population of 323. It is part of the Chatham Central School District, which is ranked 539 out of 865 school districts in New York and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Chatham High School has consistently performed well on Regents/Common Core exams, with several subject areas exceeding the state average. For example, in 2023-2024, the school had 97.56% proficiency in Regents/Common Core Algebra II and 90.14% proficiency in Regents/Common Core English Language Arts, both significantly higher than the state averages. The school has also shown strong performance across various student subgroups, ranking 317 out of 1219 NY high schools for female students, 394 out of 1211 for male students, and 131 out of 1144 for special education students, all with 4 or 5 SchoolDigger stars. However, the school has experienced higher-than-average chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 28.7% to 37.8% in recent years, which is an area the school may want to focus on.

Compared to nearby schools, Chatham High School's performance is generally stronger than some, such as Catskill Senior High School and Hudson High School, which have lower SchoolDigger rankings and lower proficiency rates on Regents/Common Core exams. However, it lags behind the higher-performing schools like Columbia High School and Maple Hill Junior/Senior High School in areas such as test scores and graduation rates. This may be due in part to the relatively high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds at Chatham High School, which can contribute to challenges like higher chronic absenteeism.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote A typical public school, they emphasize favorable test scores (which anyone with binge/purge study habits can obtain) over the creative exploration and critical thought that leads to genuine intellectual gain. The town itself is a small, insular exurb that noticeably lacks diversity. As such, children (and adults for that matter) tend to sacrifice their individuality to the gods of mediocrity in exchange for the privilege to conform. All in all, it's a great place to be average. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
