Brooklyn Ascend Charter School

Summary:

Brooklyn Ascend Charter School is a public charter school serving grades K-12 in Brooklyn, New York, with a diverse student population that is predominantly African American and Hispanic.

The school stands out for its strong academic performance, outperforming the state average on several key test score metrics, particularly in English Language Arts and Math. For example, in 2022-2023, 72.28% of 8th graders at Brooklyn Ascend were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 55.2% statewide. However, the school has seen a concerning decline in its four-year graduation rate, dropping from 93.6% in 2018-2019 to 70.1% in 2022-2023, and a relatively high dropout rate of 13.7% in 2022-2023. The school has also made significant progress in reducing chronic absenteeism, from 54.4% in 2021-2022 to 26.4% in 2022-2023, though this is still higher than the state average.

Compared to nearby public schools, such as PS 141, PS 36, and Sid Miller Academy, Brooklyn Ascend Charter School stands out for its higher test scores, despite having a more economically disadvantaged student population, as evidenced by its very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (89.03% in 2022-2023). This suggests that the school is effectively utilizing its resources to support student learning, even as it grapples with the challenges of declining graduation rates and high dropout rates.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have worked in this and other charter schools and I will say this, special needs children DO NOT get a fair education in these schools. They sit with a para in a general ed setting and are completely lost. They are given their own books or worksheets to work on while the rest of the class works on something else. They get very distracted by the other kids and the teachers all act like they're too busy to be bothered. Then with all the clapping and shouting they do during the day is ANNOYING AND UNECESSARY Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
