Achievement First Brownsville Charter School

Summary:

Achievement First Brownsville Charter School is a public charter school in Brooklyn, New York, serving students from kindergarten through 12th grade, with a diverse student population that is predominantly African American and Hispanic.

The school has seen fluctuations in its four-year graduation rates, ranging from 70.1% in 2020-2021 to 88.1% in 2021-2022, and generally performs better on academic measures like test scores and proficiency rates compared to nearby charter schools like Brooklyn Ascend Charter School and Kings Collegiate Charter School. For example, the school's 8th-grade math proficiency rate of 89.66% in 2022-2023 is significantly higher than the rates of those nearby charter schools. However, the school faces a significant challenge with high rates of chronic absenteeism, with 55.0% of students classified as chronically absent in 2022-2023, which may be impacting the school's overall academic performance.

The school serves a high-need population, with 72.34% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2021-2022, and the school's per-student spending has increased over the years, from $15,696 in 2020-2021 to $18,749 in 2022-2023. Ensuring that the school has adequate resources and staffing to support student learning will be crucial, as will addressing the chronic absenteeism concerns through targeted interventions and support for students and families. Overall, Achievement First Brownsville Charter School appears to be a high-performing school that is making a positive impact on the students it serves, but it will need to continue to address challenges to maintain and improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Where do I start first off this school isn't for all children. The staff at this particular location are all robots you never get a straight answer and when you do get an answer it's always the same one no matter who you ask. If your child does anything ( run out the classroom, play by the water fountain etc) this is call for a suspension so if you have no job and nowhere to be in the mornings then I suggest you keep looking for another school because while the curriculum is great it comes with a price I understand education is very important they will toss your child out for the smallest demerit. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
