Fannie Lou Hamer Middle School

Summary:

Fannie Lou Hamer Middle School is a public middle school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades 6-8 with a student population of 227. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #12, which is ranked 789 out of 866 districts in New York and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Fannie Lou Hamer Middle School faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of New York middle schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger for most years. Its proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math are significantly lower than the New York City District #12 and New York state averages. For example, in 2022-2023, the 8th-grade ELA proficiency rate was 38.16% compared to the district's 41.12% and the state's 55.2%. The school also has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 89.26% to 92.25% over the past 3 years.

While Fannie Lou Hamer Middle School's overall performance is low, its rankings for specific subgroups, such as English Language Learners and Special Education students, are relatively better compared to other subgroups. However, the school's higher spending per student compared to nearby schools, such as Esmt-IS 190, IS 318 Math Science & Technology Through Arts, and Emolior Academy, has not translated into improved academic outcomes, raising questions about the effective use of resources and the need for a more comprehensive approach to improving student achievement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Fannie Lou Hamer Middle School is a social promoting nightmare. My stepson is four years behind in school and yet he was promoted to the next grade. If your child doesn't do homework, can't pass a test and is years away from his/her learning level....send them to fannie Lou hamer and they will get promoted....

DISGRACEFUL SCHOOL.... how can a school pass a student from one grade to another with numerous missing homework assignments and failing every academic subject, every marking period....

Common Core Standards... ha, that is a joke... are you kidding me, my 13 year old can't even read the hands on a clock and is four years behind other class mates his age..... So much for the department of education telling us that they are strict with the new standards and that the children need to pass things to move on to the next grade....

My step son is another statistic.... failing at school..... starting to fight with other kids..... stealing..... it is just a matter of time before he get's into even more trouble.....

Schools are supposed to teach the young, not just push them through the system....

SHAME ON YOU..... THIS SCHOOL IS A MESS..... THE STUDENTS HERE ARE NOT SUPERVISED.... THEY DON'T PASS TESTS...THEY DON'T DO HOMEWORK....THEY FAIL EVERYTHING....AND THEY ARE STILL PROMOTED..... Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
