Ps 226

Summary:

PS 226 is an elementary school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 336 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #10, which is ranked 728 out of 866 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

PS 226 stands out for its consistently strong academic performance, particularly in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency rates across grades 3-5, where it outperforms both the New York City Geographic District #10 and the state of New York. The school also performs exceptionally well in certain student subgroups, ranking in the top 275 out of 1,001 New York elementary schools for English Language Learner students and in the top 265 out of 637 schools for Homeless students. This success may be attributed to the school's relatively high per-student spending of $19,411 in 2022-2023, which is higher than the surrounding schools in the district.

Compared to the other nearby schools in the same district, PS 226 consistently outperforms them in academic proficiency rates, suggesting that the school may be implementing effective instructional strategies or have access to resources that are not available to the other schools in the area. However, it's important to note that all of the schools in the immediate vicinity of PS 226, including PS 226 itself, have very high rates of free and reduced-price lunch recipients, ranging from 83.41% to 99.21%, indicating that the student population in this area faces significant socioeconomic challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The Principal has a history of harassment and intimidation towards teachers. She refuses tenure and will aggressively chase teachers out once their tenure is coming. She belittles her staff in private and even in public through the loudspeaker, while students listen. The school's ELL population suffers greatly, since the Principal is more concerned about test scores and quality reviews than actually preparing English language learners with the right tools and materials they need. She sets impossible goals for teachers and once they (obviously) can't meet her expectations she uses the teacher as a scapegoat, bullying them until they resign. So far, 6 teachers have quit in under 2 months. That alone says something about the administration. The Superintendent needs to take a closer look at this school and make MAJOR changes in administration. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
