Bloomfield Middle School

Summary:

Bloomfield Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 7-8 in Bloomfield, New Jersey, which is part of the Bloomfield Township School District. The school has a diverse student population, with a mix of White, African American, Hispanic, and Asian students.

While Bloomfield Middle School has seen a decline in its statewide ranking over the years, dropping from 187th out of 713 New Jersey middle schools in 2015-2016 to 378th out of 748 in 2022-2023, it performs particularly well for its African American and English Language Learner (ELL) student subgroups, ranking 69th and 82nd out of 361 and 288 New Jersey middle schools respectively in 2022-2023. However, its Asian and White student subgroups perform relatively poorly, ranking 168th and 233rd out of 201 and 509 New Jersey middle schools. The school has also seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 6.8% in 2016-2017 to 14.1% in 2021-2022, which is higher than the state average.

When compared to nearby middle schools, such as Lyndhurst Middle School, Memorial Middle School, and Belleville Middle School, Bloomfield Middle School generally performs worse on academic measures, with lower test scores and statewide rankings. However, it does have a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which may be a factor in its academic performance. Addressing the school's challenges, such as improving instruction, student engagement, and support services for all students, will be crucial for Bloomfield Middle School to improve its overall performance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
