The school has a higher percentage of Hispanic students (59.65%) and a lower percentage of White students (9.76%) than surrounding schools. Academically, Berkeley Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 25% of New Jersey elementary schools, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics that are significantly lower than the district and state averages. The school has also experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 8.5% in 2016-2017 to 17.8% in 2021-2022, which is higher than nearby schools like Carteret Elementary, Watsessing Elementary, and Fairview Elementary.

Berkeley Elementary's challenges extend to its funding and resource allocation, with per-student spending of $7,007 in 2018-2019, which is lower than the nearby schools, which range from $6,620 to $9,551 per student. This disparity in funding may contribute to the school's academic struggles and the need for additional resources to support student learning. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive approach, including targeted interventions, increased funding, and collaboration with the community to ensure that all students at Berkeley Elementary have the opportunity to succeed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Berkeley Elementary has been great for my kids. My daughter started there at 2nd Grade and my son started at Kindergarten. My daughter graduated last year and is now going to the Bloomfield Middle School where she is in all Honors classes. Berkeley has some awesome teachers. Teachers that truly care about each child's education and growth. They have Class Dojo which has been so helpful with communication throughout the school. They also have a great Home and School Association that really pull together and make great events for the children. Not to mention the guidance counselor who is super observant and in tune with the children’s needs. Our principal is super supportive, approachable and the children love and respect her. I truly love how she has the children do a Mantra every morning before starting school. Berkeley is a great school I highly recommend it. Close Quote

Open Quote Their is absolutely nothing “great” or “GOOD” about this school or it’s administration as a whole.
At first glimpse,
I thought how odd is it that a school sits besides a main road where yearly children and adults alike have been savagely ran over or in traumatic accidents.
My husband attempted to reassure as he was also a student here, he did however mention the lack of unity and school lunches tasting a-lot like something out of prison.

Well, 6 months later into our daughter going to this hell hole, nothing much has changed. She’s only in kindergarten but by the way I see them treat our daughter and kindergarteners you’d think they’re in college.
Recently, the principal and administration brought it upon themselves to “save” the community by placing our 5 year olds out into the field nearby the streets instead of properly having them meet there teachers in the gym due to “school shootings”.
Therefore in 30 degree weather our children were forced to line-up and stand to wait for their teachers for nearly 15-20 minutes because in the principals words, “The Children needs to woken up to the reality of first grade”.
To top it off, within the same day the children were forced to do recess outside in the same 30-40 degree weather.
We wouldn’t have relocated back here from Florida to this kind of poor school conditions if we knew our child’s lunch came out of cans, or whenever our child is being bullied it goes unnoticed or whenever children are being “disciplined” by hall monitors, it’s shouting and screaming like they’re adults.
Since being here I’ve had to watch our happy-go-lucky daughter turn into a sad child that lacks interest in school. NO CHILD should have to be treated without compassion and understanding.

If you’re okay with your child going to Fort Knox or rikers island and losing out on there whole childhood, I recommend this place of choice.

To note: the review by susie below is dismissive and ignorant as her generation in school was nearly 6 decades ago during a time that separation and segregation was “America being great”. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
