Union Cross Traditional Academy

Summary:

Union Cross Traditional Academy is an elementary school in Kernersville, North Carolina, serving 495 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district, which has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Union Cross Traditional Academy has consistently outperformed the district and state averages in mathematics and science proficiency for 5th-grade students, its reading proficiency scores for 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students have been lower than the district and state averages. The school's performance in mathematics has been mixed, with 3rd-grade students outperforming the district and state, but 4th and 5th-grade students underperforming. Compared to nearby schools in the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County district, such as Forest Park Elementary and Kernersville Elementary, Union Cross Traditional Academy's performance is generally on par or slightly better. However, the school lags behind higher-performing schools in the neighboring Davidson County district, such as Friendship Elementary and Wallburg Elementary, which have consistently higher test scores and statewide rankings.

The dramatic increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at Union Cross Traditional Academy, from 52.02% in 2020-2021 to 99.39% in 2022-2023, suggests that the school serves a predominantly low-income population, which may contribute to the challenges the school faces in academic performance. Additionally, the performance gap between the school's White student population and its African American and Hispanic student populations is noteworthy, with the White students consistently underperforming compared to their peers. This suggests that the school may need to address issues of equity and opportunity to ensure that all students, regardless of their racial or ethnic background, have the support and resources they need to succeed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Tremendously caring staff. They are working hard to meet the needs of each child...take them from where they are and grow them in reading and math. Close Quote

Open Quote My wife and I recently had to move out of the union cross distract and the hardest part of leaving was due to our kid's love for the school. The whole staff has been excellent and the AG program is phenomenal. I love the fact that they hold the children accountable, and believe in discipline. We will always cherish our time with them and can only hope our next school can be as good.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
