Greensboro Academy

Summary:

Greensboro Academy is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in Greensboro, North Carolina, with a diverse student population of over 1,000 students. The school has consistently ranked among the top elementary schools in the state, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger and a statewide ranking of 64 out of 1,505 schools in the 2023-2024 school year.

Greensboro Academy's academic performance is truly exceptional, with students consistently outperforming state averages in proficiency rates for mathematics, reading, and science. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, 89.2% of 3rd graders, 94.1% of 5th graders, and 96.5% of 8th graders were proficient or better in mathematics, compared to the state averages of 62.7%, 58.1%, and 46.9%, respectively. The school's performance is particularly strong across various student subgroups, ranking among the top 30 elementary schools in North Carolina for African American and Asian students, and among the top 100 for female, male, and low socioeconomic status students.

While Greensboro Academy's performance is exceptional, some nearby public schools, such as Sternberger Elementary and Jesse Wharton Elementary, also demonstrate strong academic results, with proficiency rates above the state averages in many subject areas. However, Greensboro Academy serves a more diverse student population, with 16.19% of students identifying as two or more races and 16.58% identifying as Asian, compared to the nearby Guilford County Schools district, which tend to have a higher percentage of White or African American students. Additionally, Greensboro Academy's student-teacher ratio of 21.9 is higher than some of the nearby public schools, suggesting the school may be able to maintain its high performance with a larger class size.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Amazing school! My son goes there and has phenomenal results in his academic work. He is supported and encouraged every step of the way. He also thrives with the structure and moral focus. The teachers and principal there really care about the kids and it shows. Close Quote

Open Quote This is the best school in Greensboro. I feel forever grateful that my children get the opportunity to attend such a great school. I am amazed on a daily basis at how my son is learning and the joy he gets from just going to school. The moral focus of this school can not be beat. That is something that is not taught but learned through the example and dedication of the awesome teachers. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is certainly comparable to a private school, but because it's a charter school, students attend without paying a steep tution. No wonder there's a HUGE waiting list. So far, (our oldest is in the fourth grade) the learning climate has been excellent. Students are encouraged to learn to the best of their ability. Test scores underline that learning is a priority. Students are offered a variety of extra curricular ativities; teachers are involved and interested. We couldn't be happier. Just wish they'd add a high school! Close Quote

Open Quote If you want your child to conform at all costs, this is the school. No room for creativity and normal energy. Discipline tied to exercise in some cases. Close Quote

Open Quote Students have a dress code, which is great. However, teachers have a dress code but it is not enforced. Young teachers wearing tight, revealing clothes. Principal Swofford, is not a fair individual. According to Swofford, staff our allowed to wear what they want cause they are adults and have a degree. So if you want your child looking at a skimpy teacher instead of focusing on educational values, send them to Greensboro Academy. Close Quote

Open Quote WONDERFUL school. I think they do a great job of teaching. My only wish is that they would expand to high school! Close Quote

Open Quote We have enjoyed the free thinking environment that they allow our children. They hold our kids to a higher standard of learning and they consider not just the academic side of school but the moral side as well, which in my opinion is seriously lacking in most public schools. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
