James Y Joyner Elementary

Summary:

James Y Joyner Elementary is a public elementary school in Greensboro, North Carolina, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Guilford County Schools district.

The school faces significant challenges, with a student population that is predominantly African American (around 50%) and Hispanic (around 14%), and an extremely high percentage (around 99%) of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage. Academically, James Y Joyner Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 25% of North Carolina elementary schools, with proficiency rates in mathematics, reading, and science that are significantly lower than the Guilford County Schools and North Carolina state averages across all grade levels. However, the school's relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 11.4 to 13.1, and higher per-student spending ($11,230 in 2018-2019) suggest that there may be opportunities for targeted interventions and support programs to help improve academic performance, particularly for the school's most disadvantaged students.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Claxton Elementary, Sternberger Elementary, and General Greene Elementary, demonstrate that high-performing schools can exist within the same district, suggesting that there may be opportunities for James Y Joyner Elementary to learn from and emulate the practices of these higher-performing schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Joyner is a great little K-5 school, with a total enrollment of around 350 to 375 students. Class sizes are considerably smaller than the magnet and charter schools, with about 19 children per class. Students attend classes in a warm and supportive environment. There is lots of ethnic diversity. The teachers and support staff are enthusiastic and take a tremendous interest in the success of the students. The principal is friendly and encourages parental involvement. The PTA is very active and plans a number of events throughout the year for the students. We believe our child, who is enrolled in kindergarten this year, is getting a very good education at Joyner, and he looks forward to going to school every day. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
