Hopewell Elementary

Summary:

Hopewell Elementary is a public elementary school in Kansas City, Missouri, serving 481 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. It is part of the Park Hill School District, which is ranked 76 out of 386 districts in Missouri and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Hopewell Elementary consistently outperforms the state and district averages in MAP test scores, with 58.1% of its 4th-grade students scoring proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the Park Hill district average of 52.2% and the Missouri state average of 46.2%. The school's African American and White student populations also perform exceptionally well, ranking 16th and 193rd, respectively, out of Missouri elementary schools. However, Hopewell's performance among low socioeconomic status (SES) students is more mixed, ranking 297th out of 625 Missouri elementary schools.

Compared to nearby schools, Hopewell Elementary generally outperforms Thomas B. Chinn Elementary and Southeast Elementary within the Park Hill School District. However, when compared to schools in the North Kansas City 74 School District, such as Briarcliff Elementary and Crestview Elementary, Hopewell's performance is more mixed. This may be due to Hopewell's lower percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients, suggesting its student population comes from relatively higher socioeconomic backgrounds, which could contribute to the school's academic success despite lower per-student spending.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Positives: Hopewell is a part of Park Hill, which is a highly rated and revered district.

Negatives: My child has recently informed me that children are not allowed to run outside during recess. Unless someone is able to provide peer reviewed medical studies proving how children not being allowed to physically exert themselves is "healthy," mentally and physically, this sounds like we have a big problem. One that could easily be disproved by a Pediatrician's expertise and media exposure. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
