High School North

Summary:

High School North is a public magnet high school in Macomb, Michigan, serving 1,588 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the L'Anse Creuse Public Schools district, which is ranked 288 out of 610 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

High School North stands out for its consistently strong academic performance, with students outperforming district and state averages on standardized tests like the M-Step and SAT. In 2023-2024, 32.6% of 11th-grade students were proficient or better in M-Step/Science, compared to 32.1% for the district and 37.5% for the state. The school also maintains high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 93.9% to 98.8% over the past five years, outperforming nearby schools and the state average. However, High School North has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, from 10.9% in 2018-2019 to 35.1% in 2021-2022, which is higher than the nearby schools and the state average.

While High School North has a higher percentage of white students (77.96%) compared to nearby schools like High School (68.22%) and DiAnne M Pellerin Center (57.08%), the school's performance on standardized tests for African American and Hispanic students is generally lower than the overall school performance, indicating potential racial achievement gaps that the school may need to address. Overall, High School North is a well-performing public magnet school, but it faces challenges related to racial disparities and rising chronic absenteeism that warrant further investigation and targeted interventions.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have always been happy with the High School North, but when Mr Jackson left, and the rules began to be more strict, that is a true blessing. Dress codes are important, who wants to see anyones underwear, I know I dont! You cant bring in drinks, and thats a great one, why would we want to risk our children bringing in alcohol, and thats what would happen if we allowed that. Absenses this ones, a really important one, our district gets money if our students are attending school and learning, if theres no rules on attendence our school goes downhill, and we lose money, education is important, and if youre not a caring parent that wants your child to succeed, send them to a district that doesnt care. I rate this school 5 stars bravo LCN!!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
