Cleveland Elementary School

Summary:

Cleveland Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-4 in Livonia, Michigan, with a student population of 428 as of the 2022-2023 school year. The school is part of the Livonia Public Schools School District, which is ranked 84 out of 610 districts in Michigan and has a 4-star rating.

Cleveland Elementary has faced several challenges in recent years. The school has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 15.5% in 2019-2020 to 27.8% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the district average of 22.9% at nearby Hayes Elementary and 22.3% at Grant Elementary. Academically, Cleveland Elementary's performance, as measured by M-Step proficiency rates, lags behind the district and state averages, with only 46.5% of 3rd graders and 42.9% of 4th graders proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 58.4% and 59.6% for the district, respectively. The school also has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 62.15% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in 2022-2023, significantly higher than the nearby schools.

The racial composition of Cleveland Elementary has been shifting, with a decrease in the percentage of white students and an increase in African American and Hispanic students. This trend is worth monitoring to understand any potential impacts on the school's academic performance and support needs. Additionally, the school's performance for specific student subgroups, such as African American and white students, varies significantly, suggesting the need for tailored instructional approaches and support to address the unique needs of different populations. While Cleveland Elementary's spending per student has increased over the years, this higher spending has not yet translated into significant improvements in academic performance, indicating the need for a closer examination of how these funds are being utilized and allocated.

Open Quote Have a daughter in 4th grade. Her teacher is always absent. There is NEVER homework-only for the children to study spelling words, basic math facts, and read each night. This teaches children to be lazy and does not prepare them for 5th grade at Cooper. So disappointed. Teachers have websites on the Cleveland page but, they aren't used. Such a waste of a great resource. Very disappointed. Close Quote

Open Quote Good school and good atmosphere. The Principal and teachers work hard with every student. Student to teacher ratio is much higher than represented here. Closer to 24 kids per teacher. That would be the only drawback. Other than that, my kid enjoys Cleveland and so far we have had a promising experience. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
