Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle

Summary:

Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle is a public school in Baltimore, Maryland that serves students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. With a diverse student population, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Maryland elementary schools in recent years, facing significant challenges in academic performance.

Despite spending more per student than the state average, Margaret Brent's test scores on the MCAP exams lag far behind state and district averages, with only 10.1% of students proficient in math and 24.1% proficient in English language arts in the 2023-2024 school year. The school's performance varies widely by student subgroup, with its Hispanic students outperforming its African American students. Nearby schools like Baltimore Montessori Public Charter School and Hampden Elementary/Middle tend to have higher proficiency rates and better overall rankings compared to Margaret Brent.

Despite the higher per-student spending, the school's academic outcomes remain poor, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be enough to drive improvement without other targeted interventions. With a declining enrollment, from 248 students in 2022-2023 to 193 students in 2023-2024, Margaret Brent Elementary/Middle faces significant challenges in providing a high-quality education for its diverse student population within the Baltimore City Public Schools district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have visited their kindergarten class and was very impressed with the teacher and her ability to engage and to keep the students engaged in a reading circle. The school was organized, pleasant and clean. Close Quote

Open Quote Character, Creativity, and Community. This is a school that helps each child develop as an individual while in a small nurturing community. Margaret Brent is the secret of Charles Village. A school which has 280 students grades, pre-k through 8th, has small class sizes that allows for one on one teacher contact. Margaret Brent teaches character education through its Lion Quest program. A program that helps children with team building and decision making. Creativity is something that Ms. Prince, the art teacher, loves to foster in her classes. Whether it is getting the students to help paint murals on lockers in the Ben Carson Reading Room or foster a love for creating ceramics, Ms. Prince is all about it. This year (2010-2011) Margaret Brent began Project Based Learning which has put the discovery and learning into our students hands. Great things are happening at Brent! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
