Freetown Elementary

Summary:

Freetown Elementary is a public elementary school located in Glen Burnie, Maryland, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 521. The school is part of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district, which is ranked 10th out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Freetown Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with a racial makeup of 24.95% White, 39.73% African American, 21.69% Hispanic, 4.99% Asian, and 7.29% two or more races. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by MCAP test scores, is generally lower than the Anne Arundel County and Maryland state averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in MCAP Mathematics for all grades was 25.1% at Freetown Elementary, compared to 27.6% for Anne Arundel County and 24.1% for Maryland. Additionally, Freetown Elementary has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 67.5% to 72.36% over the past three school years, which is significantly higher than the nearby schools.

Despite the school's relatively high spending per student, ranging from $14,835 to $15,710 over the past three school years, Freetown Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Maryland elementary schools, with a 1 or 2-star rating from SchoolDigger over the past several years. This suggests that the school may need to focus on addressing the specific needs of its diverse student population, particularly for subgroups such as female students, African American students, Hispanic students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. While Freetown Elementary's performance is generally lower than the nearby schools, such as Woodside Elementary and Marley Elementary, which also have relatively low academic performance and high free and reduced lunch rates, the school's challenges may require a comprehensive approach to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I live directly in front of Freetown Elementary School and my 2 grandchildren are in K and grade 2. This is a brand new school with the best staff imaginable. The teachers spend an inordinate amount of time with the children and are interested in the success of every child.
Statistical data can measure numbers; it cannot measure heart or caring. That is the reason this is great school with great leadership. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
