Glen Burnie High

Summary:

Glen Burnie High is a public high school serving 2,324 students in grades 9-12 in Glen Burnie, Maryland, which is part of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district. While the school has a diverse student population, it has consistently underperformed academically compared to the district and state, ranking 120th out of 146 Maryland high schools and receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Glen Burnie High's academic performance is a key concern, with only 5.4% of students proficient or better in MCAP/Mathematics for All Grades, compared to 27.6% for the district and 24.1% for the state. Additionally, the school has a significantly higher percentage of students (61.23%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a higher proportion of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Despite these challenges, Glen Burnie High has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 17.3, which is lower than some of the nearby schools like Severna Park High.

When compared to nearby high-performing schools, such as Arundel High and Severna Park High, the disparity in academic achievement becomes even more evident. This suggests that there may be opportunities for improvement in the school's educational programs and resources to better support the diverse student population and help them succeed academically.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote They are positive things I like to say about the school. The teachers and staff are nice the school resource officers are nice. The worst thing about this school is that I have gone bullied before buying a student and one of the students tell the whole school not to be friends with me and I was going to a situation with that student and this one boy who literally pushed me in the hall and after a week later he started being all nice instead of apologizing to me the bathrooms are always be locked up. The school smells like weed it is hard to use the bathroom because one of the bathroom things don't work and people keep believing trash in the sinks the kids eat in the bathrooms which is really disgusting the bathrooms will be way too full all the time for no reason because they're not doing what they're supposed to and it's hard to use the bathroom this way. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
