New Orleans Military & Maritime Academy

Summary:

New Orleans Military & Maritime Academy is a public charter high school serving grades 8-12 in New Orleans, Louisiana, with a diverse student population of over 800 students.

Academically, the school has struggled compared to the state average, with lower proficiency rates in mathematics, English Language Arts, and end-of-course exams. The school's performance has declined over the years, with its statewide ranking dropping from 12th in 2013-2014 to 176th in 2023-2024. However, the school performs better than some nearby charter high schools, such as The NET Charter High School and New Orleans Charter Science and Mathematics High School, which have lower proficiency rates and statewide rankings. The school's diverse student population, with 23.81% White, 27.12% African American, and 41.46% Hispanic students, is a strength, though it lags behind the highly-ranked Thomas Jefferson High School for Advanced Studies in academic performance.

One of the school's notable strengths is its exceptional performance for English Language Learners and Special Education students, ranking in the top 5% and top 10% of Louisiana high schools, respectively, in these categories. However, the school faces socioeconomic challenges, with 71.89% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, significantly higher than the state average. This trend is common among nearby charter schools, with several having over 70% of their students from low-income backgrounds, such as G.W. Carver High School and Edna Karr High School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote THIS IS A FAIR WARNING TO ALL PARENTS. Do not send yor child or children to this school. The orientation is very convincing but the school itself is basically a alternative school. Parents have sent their troubled kids here to be straighten out. It's not structured, nor do facitily or staff care about the well being of your child. Gang fights, kids with guns at the school, bullying, drugs, peer pressure and more. Even a concern mother is ignored after serval attempts to to communicate with the school. THIS SCHOOL HAS MORE PARENTS PULLING THEIR KIDS OUT. This school should be close down. I am very disappointed with the school myself. Close Quote

Open Quote This is an up and coming school! The school is only in it's fifth year, and it continues to improve every year. Test scores support my evaluation, and they improve yearly (they exceed LA averages across the board). A well disciplined, and well rounded and innovative school. I anticipate that this school will improve annually because of it's well rounded program, that continues to grow. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
