Northview Middle School

Summary:

Northview Middle School is a public middle school in Indianapolis, Indiana, serving 784 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the MSD Washington Township district, which is ranked 201 out of 381 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Northview Middle School stands out from nearby schools in several key ways. It has a significantly higher percentage of African American (47.19%) and Hispanic (22.58%) students compared to surrounding schools, which tend to have more White students. The school also has a higher chronic absenteeism rate (23.4%) than the district average (17.3% at Eastwood Middle School and 22.2% at Westlane Middle School). Academically, Northview's performance on ILEARN tests is lower than the district and state averages, with only 35.05% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 29.55% in math.

Despite higher per-student spending ($13,709) compared to the district average ($11,998 at Eastwood Middle School and $14,027 at Westlane Middle School), Northview's academic performance remains a concern. The school also has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (71.56%) than the surrounding schools, which range from 51.92% to 67.8%. These factors suggest a potential correlation between socioeconomic status and academic achievement, and addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism could be a key focus area for improvement at Northview Middle School.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
