Merrillville High School

Summary:

Merrillville High School is a public high school serving 2,042 students in grades 9-12 in Merrillville, Indiana. The school is part of the Merrillville Community School Corporation, which is ranked 268 out of 381 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Merrillville High School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of African American students (67.92%) compared to nearby schools, which range from 4.07% to 84.66% African American. The school has maintained relatively high four-year graduation rates, ranging from 89.3% to 92.9% over the past five years, higher than some nearby schools. However, Merrillville High School has experienced high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.1% to 32.6% over the past three years, significantly higher than the nearby schools. Additionally, the school's test scores, particularly in mathematics, are consistently lower than the state and nearby school averages, with only 9.47% of 11th-grade students proficient or better in SAT Mathematics in 2023-2024, compared to the state average of 31.14%.

These findings suggest that Merrillville High School faces unique challenges, including racial disparities, high chronic absenteeism, and underperformance in mathematics, despite maintaining relatively high graduation rates. Addressing these issues will require a comprehensive approach that considers the school's specific context and the needs of its diverse student body. Comparisons to nearby schools, such as Neighbors' New Vistas High School and Gary Middle College, which have significantly lower graduation rates and higher chronic absenteeism rates, indicate that Merrillville High School may be serving a more stable student population, but still faces significant challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Merrillville High School used to be a very solid school with dedicated staff, dedicated parents, and dedicated students! No longer...this school is the worst SUBURBAN school in the region! I graduated as a proud Merrillville Pirate! No longer...my family is now proud supporters of the Crown Point Bulldogs and many of my fellow alumn have made that decision as well. There are even more future families making that decision...We used to hate the Bulldogs...how times change!

Merrillville needs to do more to ensure that families who are sending their children to school here actually live in the Merrillville school district. Merrillville also needs to address the fact that gang violence and drugs are rampant even at MIS! It's a shame.

I am glad my last child will be graduating from CPHS. Close Quote

Open Quote Over the past few years, Merrillville High has received a bad rap for being one of the most problematic schools in Northwest, IN, when in reality, MHS is a great school. Not only does it host some of the finest facilities in the state, and fantastic football and B/G basketball teams, every student is given the proper tools to receive a great education. In recent years, there has been a large influx of students moving to Merrillville and transferring to MHS. Many of these students came from schools where there were ineffective teachers, so they had trouble learning and passing ISTEP (which results in a lower ISTEP score for the school and its ranking among other schools in the state). When they arrive at MHS though, many dedicated and supportive teachers spend their time before and after school helping those students that need help. There is even an optional after-school program where you can get help for any subject. If you need more proof at how MHS is a great school, look at the graduation rate for Indiana and compare it to the graduation rate of MHS. The Indiana graduation rate is in the 70% to 80% range, but the graduation rate for the class of 2010 was 90.8% (approximately 507 out about 550 seniors graduated!!) The class of 2009 had a graduation rate of 87.3% (that's over a 3% increase between 2009 and 2010!!) I promise, as a current student attending Merrillville High School, MHS is one of the best schools a student could possibly attend. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
