Options Westfield

Summary:

Options Westfield is a public charter high school serving grades 6-12 in Carmel, Indiana, with a total enrollment of 228 students. While part of the Options Charter Schools district, which is ranked 320 out of 381 districts in the state, Options Westfield has consistently underperformed compared to nearby high-performing schools.

Academically, Options Westfield struggles, with only 23.78% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and just 7.32% proficient or better in Math on the ILEARN assessments - significantly lower than the state averages and the performance of nearby schools like Zionsville Community High School and Carmel High School. The school's four-year graduation rate is also low at just 56.4%, and it has a very high chronic absenteeism rate of 47.4%.

Interestingly, Options Westfield has a student population that is 71.05% white, much higher than the diversity seen at nearby schools like Purdue Polytechnic High School North, which is only 45.58% white. This lack of diversity may be a contributing factor to the significant achievement gaps observed for certain student subgroups at Options Westfield. Despite spending more per student than nearby public schools, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Indiana high schools, suggesting a need for significant interventions to improve its outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The two Options Charter Schools are perhaps the best "alternative school" programs in the Midwest. Traditional public schools that have separate alternative schools absorb testing statistics in the entire school data. As a "stand-alone" alternative charter school, this school takes the 9th and 10th graders who have been low-scoring and failing students and closes the gap significantly. The low test scores simply indicate that this school is meeting its mission. They are turning these students around with a tremendous growth rate in academics and continued success after high school. Kudos for these innovative educators for creating an innovative approach to addressing the needs of students who have fallen behind. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
