Memorial Elementary School

Summary:

Memorial Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 296 students in grades PK-5 in Tinley Park, Illinois, which is part of Community Consolidated School District 146. While the school has consistently ranked in the top 30-35% of Illinois elementary schools, it faces some challenges, including increasing chronic absenteeism and declining academic performance compared to nearby high-performing schools.

Memorial Elementary School's academic performance is strong, with students outperforming the district and state averages in both English Language Arts and Mathematics, particularly in the 5th grade. The school's Hispanic and low socioeconomic status student subgroups also perform well, ranking in the top 30% of Illinois elementary schools. However, the nearby Christa McAuliffe School and Millennium Elementary School, which are part of the Kirby School District 140, outperform Memorial Elementary School in both subject areas.

One area of concern for Memorial Elementary School is the steady increase in chronic absenteeism, from 9.3% in 2019-2020 to 22.7% in 2021-2022, which is higher than the district and state averages. This decline in attendance may be a contributing factor to the school's overall performance, which has dropped from the top 20% of Illinois elementary schools in 2015-2016 to the top 30-35% in recent years. Addressing the chronic absenteeism issue and learning from the practices of the higher-performing nearby schools could help Memorial Elementary School improve its academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote have had all of my children in this school over the course of many years. The teachers are all so very caring and helpful. We have had a few changes in principals over the years but this year they really found the perfect one. He is so involved with the kids, parents and staff. Morale is terrific and they always have fun activities planned though out the school year for the kids:reading nights, family fun nights etc. Teachers, principal and staff always put in 200%of their time for our children during school and after as well. Love the reading programs that are enforced to inspire the children and get them motivated. We have a wonderful PTA and they organize so many fun activities throughout the school year. A very family friendly school, I couldn't be happier. Have also had involvement with their early learning program at the school, and cannot not say enough, they are so caring and helpful. I do not know where we would be without their nurturing, guidance and kindness. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
