Flint Hill Elementary

Summary:

Flint Hill Elementary is a public elementary school located in Oxford, Georgia, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 852 students. The school is part of the Newton County School District, which is ranked 157 out of 203 districts in Georgia and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Flint Hill Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of Georgia elementary schools, with a ranking between 723 and 1132 out of around 1,200-1,250 schools over the past 10 years. The school has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of this period, with a brief period of a 2-star rating in 2015-2016 and 2013-2014. Flint Hill Elementary significantly underperforms the Newton County and Georgia state averages in proficiency rates for the Milestones Assessments across all grade levels and subject areas, with proficiency rates typically 10-20 percentage points below the county and 20-30 percentage points below the state. The school also has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 72.67% to 84.98% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools in the Newton County district.

Despite the high per-student spending and low student-teacher ratios at Flint Hill Elementary, the school is still underperforming academically. This suggests that simply increasing funding and reducing class sizes may not be enough to improve student outcomes at the school, and that other factors, such as curriculum, instruction, and school leadership, may need to be addressed. When comparing Flint Hill Elementary to the other nearby schools in the Newton County district, it is clear that the school is an outlier in terms of academic performance, with the nearby schools, such as East Newton Elementary and Fairview Elementary, having significantly higher proficiency rates on the Milestones Assessments.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
