Live Oak Elementary

Summary:

Live Oak Elementary is a public elementary school in Covington, Georgia, serving 891 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Newton County School District, which is ranked 157 out of 203 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Live Oak Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools, with significantly lower performance on the Milestones Assessment compared to state and county averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 13.2% to 27.5% of students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 37% to 48.2%. In mathematics, just 10.3% to 18.5% of students were proficient or better, compared to the state average of 41% to 48.1%. The school also struggles in science, with only 17.3% of 5th graders proficient or better, versus the state average of 41.7%. These academic challenges may be linked to the school's high percentage of students from low-income families, ranging from 77.16% to 84.96% over the past few years.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Middle Ridge Elementary, Livingston Elementary, and Newton County Theme School at Ficquett, Live Oak Elementary lags behind in academic performance. The nearby schools, particularly Newton County Theme School at Ficquett, have significantly higher proficiency rates, ranging from 60% to 70% in English Language Arts and Mathematics. These schools also have lower percentages of students from low-income families, suggesting that targeted interventions and additional resources could help Live Oak Elementary improve student outcomes.

Open Quote The staff here are horrendous, lack communication and comprehension- deliberately are not documenting the children’s growth and development throughout the year.
They are not intrigued by parent involvement, does not tend to their due diligence when maintaining the school’s culture, creed nor ethics, very unpleasant & unorganized. Close Quote

Open Quote My son has Adhd. I am frequently involved in his education. All I ask is for good communication from the principal, teacher, councilor and nurse. I can rate the nurse and the teacher excellent, but the others have very poor communication skills. I would leave messages ask for appointments and send letters with no response. They even did an annual review of my sons 504 plan without notifing me of the meeting, which I have every right to attend. A month later they sent a copy home of the 504 which noted that the mother didn't show. I was irate. Luckily the teacher and I had good parent/teacher relationship and were able to keep my son from falling behind and having testing issues. But as a parent who has paid excessive money to Sylvan, private tutors and a psychologist, I must say that I was extremely disappointed by the lack of interest and responsibility that the school overall took in my son. He is not a problem child, no behavior issues. By the end of the year I was exhausted with frustration. I don't know what we will do this year. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
