Eagle Lake Elementary School

Summary:

Eagle Lake Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-5 in Eagle Lake, Florida, with a student population of 697. The school is part of the Polk School District, which is ranked 57th out of 68 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite increased per-student spending, Eagle Lake Elementary faces several challenges. The school has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.2% in 2019-2020 to 46.7% in 2021-2022, which is significantly higher than the state and district averages. Additionally, the school's test scores are consistently lower than the state and district averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, only 28% of 5th-grade students were proficient or better in Statewide Science, compared to 48% in the district and 53% statewide. The school also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 59.25% in 2022-2023 to 70.88% in 2021-2022, suggesting a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, Eagle Lake Elementary generally performs worse on key metrics like test scores and chronic absenteeism. For instance, Chain of Lakes Elementary, located about 5 miles away, has significantly higher test scores and a lower chronic absenteeism rate. Addressing the root causes of these issues, such as attendance and access to resources, may be crucial for Eagle Lake Elementary to improve its performance and provide a better educational experience for its students.

Open Quote Does not help the children. Been told on several occasions that my son needs to do it on his own. The teacher explains one time how to do something. If they do not get it than they have to figure it out by there self. They either need to close this school or get someone there to bring in all new staff, from the office to the teachers. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
