Denison Middle School

Summary:

Denison Middle School is a public middle school located in Winter Haven, Florida, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 738 students. The school has a diverse student population, with a majority of Hispanic and African American students.

Despite its diverse student body, Denison Middle School faces several challenges. The school has a significantly higher chronic absenteeism rate of 41.2%, compared to the Polk district average of 35.4% and the state average of 28%. Additionally, the school's test scores are consistently lower than the Polk district and Florida state averages across various subjects and grade levels, with only 27-28% of students proficient in English Language Arts and 16-40% proficient in Math. Denison Middle School also has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 68.97%, which is significantly higher than the state average of 59.07%. As a result, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Florida middle schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

When comparing Denison Middle School to nearby schools in the same district, such as Union Academy and Berkley Accelerated Middle School, it becomes evident that Denison is underperforming. These nearby schools have significantly higher test scores, lower chronic absenteeism rates, and higher SchoolDigger rankings. The high rates of chronic absenteeism and free/reduced lunch at Denison Middle School may be contributing factors to the school's lower academic performance, presenting an opportunity for the district and school administration to implement targeted interventions and strategies to address these underlying issues and improve student outcomes.

Open Quote I think it's time the Polk County School Board steps up and does something about their troubled schools. Denison is one of the worse and I have the misfortune to be raising three grandchildren who have attended this low grade school. It has effected the boy the most and they don't care. Florida needs to pay closer attention. Denison Middle is ranked 808? How sad for our future leaders. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
