Poinciana High School

Summary:

Poinciana High School is a public high school in Kissimmee, Florida, serving 2,455 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Osceola School District, which is ranked 58 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Poinciana High School has maintained a relatively high four-year graduation rate, ranging from 92.1% to 93.5% over the past few years, the school has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 19.6% in 2019-2020 to 40.1% in 2022-2023. This is notably higher than the state and district averages. Additionally, Poinciana High School's test scores are consistently lower than the state and district averages across various subjects and grade levels, with proficiency rates in Algebra 1 (26%), Geometry (35%), and 10th grade English Language Arts (43%) significantly below the state and district averages. The school also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 48.47% to 55.94% over the past few years, indicating a higher proportion of economically disadvantaged students.

When compared to nearby schools, Poinciana High School generally performs worse on key metrics such as test scores and graduation rates. For example, Neocity Academy, a high-performing charter school within the same district, has significantly higher test scores and a 100% graduation rate. Addressing the chronic absenteeism issue and exploring ways to improve academic performance, potentially through targeted interventions and resource allocation, could be important steps in enhancing Poinciana High School's overall performance and student outcomes.

Open Quote The teachers do not communicate with parents when they feel the student is in danger of failing. I have had much difficulty trying to reach the Guidance Department to discuss problems with teachers or to arrange a parent teacher conference, calls are seldom returned. On two occasions when my child told me she was having problems with classes it turned out to be mistakes on the part of the teachers almost costing her 2 letter grades. In one instance a teacher told me she didn't know she had to hit the save button to save the grade resulting in my daughter receiving 0's. These teachers are the ones teaching our children. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
