Econ River High Charter

Summary:

Econ River High Charter is a public charter high school in Orlando, Florida, serving 269 students in grades 9-12. While part of the Orange County School District, which is ranked 31 out of 68 districts in the state, Econ River High Charter appears to be an underperforming school with significant challenges.

Econ River High Charter stands out for its high percentage of Hispanic students (68.77%), significantly lower graduation rates (ranging from 12.7% to 34.3% over the past five years), and extremely high chronic absenteeism (85.0% to 93.8%). The school's students consistently perform well below the district and state averages in all tested subjects, including Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1, US History, and English Language Arts. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 17% of Econ River High Charter students were proficient or better in Geometry, compared to 54% in the Orange County district and 53% statewide. Interestingly, the school has very low rates of free and reduced lunch recipients, ranging from 1.06% to 1.12%, much lower than the surrounding schools.

While Econ River High Charter is a public charter school, it performs significantly worse than other nearby charter schools, such as Access Charter and Aloma High Charter, in terms of graduation rates, test scores, and chronic absenteeism. Despite having the highest spending per student and the highest student-teacher ratio among the surrounding schools, these resources do not seem to translate into better academic outcomes for the students at Econ River High Charter.

Open Quote Principal is very sweet and humble, as is the assistant principal, my only problem is finding teachers with mental health backgrounds please...my daughter attends this school and sometimes she is so afraid to go everyday because of the math teacher she has here is very hostile and rude. I understand that the math teacher has to be this way with certain students but my child should not be one of them and my child should not be frightened to go to school every single day. That is hurting her education. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
