Lockhart Elementary

Summary:

Lockhart Elementary is a public elementary school in Orlando, Florida, serving 388 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Orange County School District, which is ranked 31 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 3-star rating.

Lockhart Elementary faces several significant challenges. The school has a much higher percentage of African American students (66.75%) compared to nearby schools, and it consistently struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 22.7% to 53.3% over the past few years. Academically, Lockhart's test scores are consistently lower than the Orange County and Florida averages across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, Lockhart's 3rd-grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 50%, compared to 57% for Orange County and 55% for Florida. Additionally, Lockhart has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 71.43% to 76.8%, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

Despite Lockhart Elementary's relatively high per-student spending, ranging from $12,933 to $15,950 over the past few years, the school's academic performance remains low, suggesting that simply increasing funding may not be the sole solution. Nearby schools, such as Pinecrest Creek Charter, consistently outperform Lockhart Elementary on test scores and have higher statewide rankings. Addressing the root causes of Lockhart's challenges, such as chronic absenteeism and racial disparities in educational outcomes, will be crucial for improving the school's performance and ensuring that all students receive the support they need to succeed.

Open Quote Great small community school with loving principal and staff. State Grade does not give this school justice, this school is an "A" for parents, students, and staff. State Grades are based on one day of testing and does not include school involvement, teacher dedication, etc. Lockhart Elementary has really helped my ESE student and has been very caring to single parents. It is a great school with parent/teacher relationships and in a good community in Orlando. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
