Bear Lake Elementary School

Summary:

Bear Lake Elementary School is a public elementary school in Apopka, Florida, serving 924 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Seminole School District, which is ranked 7th out of 68 districts in the state.

While Bear Lake Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with 39.39% Hispanic and 15.37% African American students, the school faces some challenges. It has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 4.7% in 2019-2020 to 23.8% in 2022-2023, higher than the 14.8% to 38.5% range at nearby schools. Additionally, the school's test scores, particularly in 5th grade math, are lower than the Seminole District and state averages, though its 5th-grade science proficiency rate of 60% exceeds the state average of 53%. The school also has a higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at 58.87%, compared to 33.86% to 79.86% at nearby schools.

Bear Lake Elementary's statewide ranking has steadily declined, from 494th out of 2,118 Florida elementary schools in 2017-2018 to 1,170th out of 2,256 in 2023-2024. This decline, along with the school's lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism compared to nearby schools like Sabal Point Elementary School and Wekiva Elementary School, suggests that Bear Lake Elementary may face unique challenges that require targeted interventions and support to address the needs of its economically disadvantaged student population.

Open Quote Bear Lake Elementary is an excellent school with wonderful, caring teachers and staff. My son has excelled there with straight A's, and we plan to keep him there until he reaches middle school. Even though I now have a long drive due to my new job, the education he is receiving at Bear Lake is worth the sacrifice of staying in our current home and commuting. I highly recommend this school. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
