Independence Academy

Summary:

Independence Academy is a public charter elementary and middle school located in Dover, Florida, serving grades K-8 with a total enrollment of 914 students. The school is part of the Hillsborough School District, which is ranked 45th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Independence Academy stands out in several key areas. The school has a significantly higher percentage of White students (63.02%) compared to the nearby schools, which have more diverse student populations. Academically, Independence Academy outperforms the Hillsborough district and the state of Florida in several key areas, with higher proficiency rates in EOC/Algebra 1, EOC/Geometry, EOC/Biology 1, and EOC/Civics. However, the school has seen a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 7.4% in 2020-2021 to 22.0% in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average and the nearby schools. Additionally, Independence Academy has a lower percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (39.82%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 48.29% to 84.03%.

Despite its strong academic performance, Independence Academy's statewide ranking has been declining over the years, from 641st out of 2,087 Florida elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 1,145th out of 2,256 in 2023-2024. This suggests that while the school is performing well, other schools in the state may be improving at a faster rate. Interestingly, the nearby Walden Lake Elementary School outperforms Independence Academy and the district in several academic areas, while schools like Mango Elementary and McDonald Elementary struggle with lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism.

Open Quote My daughters attended last year (1st & 2nd grade) and will attend again this year. We love this school and the teachers and staff that work there. It really feels like a family and the staff go above and beyond to care for our children! We love the clubs and the after school program as well as the summer camp offered to students. The only con is the drop off line at the beginning of the year taking some time. However now I know that will pass in a few weeks :) Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
