Bailey Elementary School

Summary:

Bailey Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Dover, Florida, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of 741. The school is part of the Hillsborough School District, which is ranked 45 out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Bailey Elementary has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a balanced racial composition, the school faces several challenges. It has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 11.8% in 2019-2020 to 37.3% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the state and district averages. Academically, Bailey Elementary's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math are consistently lower than the Hillsborough district and Florida state averages, with only 29-37% of students proficient in these subjects compared to 51-56% at the district level and 53-60% statewide. The school's 5th-grade science proficiency rates have also been lower than the district and state, ranging from 35-47%.

Bailey Elementary's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 65.99% to 76.16% over the past few years, suggests that the school may be serving a high-poverty student population, which can present unique challenges. While the school's spending per student has increased from $9,159 in 2019-2020 to $10,232 in 2022-2023, which is higher than the state average, its academic performance has steadily declined, with its statewide ranking dropping from 1044 out of 2087 Florida elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 1957 out of 2256 in 2023-2024. Nearby schools, such as Walden Lake Elementary, consistently outperform Bailey Elementary in academic proficiency and have higher ratings from SchoolDigger.

Open Quote Bailey Elementary has caring teachers and an energetic staff that welcomes parents and community members and helps each child feel safe and important. Mrs. Zilbar and Mrs. Mayo work hard to make sure that everything runs smoothly. The school provides opportunities including Mr. Hanford's afterschool program, Odyssey of the Mind, student council, and safety patrols. My children love it and look forward to going to school every day! They both feel that they have the best teachers in the world! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
