Cork Elementary School

Summary:

Cork Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Plant City, Florida, serving grades PK-5 with a student population of around 690. The school is part of the Hillsborough School District, which is ranked 45th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Over the past several years, Cork Elementary has consistently been ranked in the bottom half of Florida elementary schools, typically in the 1300-1500 range out of around 2,200 schools.

Cork Elementary has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (around 51%) compared to the nearby schools, which tend to have a more even mix of White, African American, and Hispanic students. The school has also struggled with high chronic absenteeism rates, reaching as high as 27.4% in the 2021-2022 school year, notably higher than the nearby schools, which range from 13-22% chronic absenteeism. Academically, Cork Elementary's performance, as measured by proficiency rates on state assessments, is consistently lower than the Hillsborough district and Florida state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2023-2024, Cork's 5th grade science proficiency was 44%, compared to 47% for Hillsborough and 53% for the state.

When comparing Cork Elementary to the nearby schools in the Hillsborough district, it becomes clear that Cork is underperforming academically compared to its peers. For example, Lincoln Elementary Magnet School, which is just 4.6 miles away, consistently outperforms Cork Elementary by 10-20 percentage points on state assessments. The high rates of chronic absenteeism and free/reduced lunch at Cork Elementary may be contributing factors to the school's lower academic performance, but the school's 5th grade math proficiency rate of 55% in 2023-2024 was closer to the district and state averages, indicating that with the right interventions and support, the school could potentially improve in other subject areas as well.

Open Quote I love this school. My daughter came from another state and started at Limona Elementary for 1st grade. They changed her teacher within 2 weeks without any notice and the teacher never sent work home or spelling test to let me know how she was doing. Then we had to move her in the middle of the year to Cork and it was the best thing for her. Her reading and writing went up and she continued after her first grading period to bring up her N's to S and E's. She stayed an Honor Roll student and by last grading period had all E's and 1 S. She also was Cougar of the month. I never want to move because I'm scared there is no other school better then Cork. The staff is also very friendly and welcoming. Teachers stay in contact with the parents to let you know whats going on and what your child needs help with. My daughter likes her teacher so much she even writes about her in her daily journal at school and I believe that says a lot about the way teachers treat our children, with love and encouragement. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
