Tiger Academy

Summary:

Tiger Academy is a public charter elementary school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving 233 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school has a predominantly African American student body (96.14%) and is part of the Duval school district, which is ranked 54th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite spending significantly more per student ($15,638 in 2022-2023) compared to nearby schools, Tiger Academy's academic performance is consistently lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 30-36% of Tiger Academy students were proficient or better in English Language Arts and Math, compared to 46-55% at the district level and 53-60% at the state level. Additionally, Tiger Academy has experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 8.2% in 2019-2020 to 33.3% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the district and state averages.

When comparing Tiger Academy to the nearby schools, such as Pickett Elementary, Biltmore Elementary, and R.V. Daniels Elementary, it becomes evident that Tiger Academy is underperforming academically. These surrounding schools generally have higher test scores, lower chronic absenteeism rates, and better overall performance metrics, despite serving more diverse student populations.

Open Quote THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE WORST SCHOOL. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS SCHOOL TO ANYONE. THE STUDENTS ARE HORRIBLE. THEY ARE WILD AND OUT OF CONTROL. THEY CURSE, THEY FIGHT, THEY BULLY, THEY STEAL AND TIGERS ADMINISTRATION DOES NOTHING ABOUT IT MOST OF THE TIME. SOME OF THE TEACHERS ARE HORRIBLE. THEY TALK ABOUT ACADEMICS BUT SOME SPEND MORE TIME YELLING AT THE STUDENTS AND OFF OF WORK THAN ACTUALLY TEACHING AND KNOWING WHAT IS GOING ON IN THEIR CLASSROOMS. THE SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS ARE JUST THERE, THEY DON'T HAVE A CLUE WHAT'S GOING ON. I DON'T KNOW HOW SOME OF THEM WILL MAKE IT AS A FUTURE TEACHER. DURING COVID, THE CAFETERIA WORKERS WERE NOT PROPERTY WEARING MASK AND GLOVES. THE SCHOOL WERE NOT PROPERLY NOTIFYING THE COVID CASES TO PARENTS EACH TIME SOMEONE WAS POSITIVE AND WHEN ASKED ABOUT SANITATION PROCEDURES IT WAS NOT TAKEN SERIOUS. FIELD TRIPS ARE A JOKE, THEY ARE USUALLY AT THE SAME PLACES, MAYBE THE SCHOOL SHOULD CHOOSE BETTER FIELD TRIPS FOR THEIR STUDENTS. GRADUATION! THE BIGGEST JOKE! IT'S ALWAYS AT A CHURCH...,THE SAME CHURCH. NOWHERE TO PARK. IT'S ALL GRASS. A VERY OLD CHURCH, LOOMY LOOKING INSIDE. THIS YEAR THE AC IN THE CHURCH WAS NOT WORKING! SERIOUSLY TIGER ACADEMY! THE TEACHER ASK FOR SNACKS FOR THE CLASSROOM! THIS SCHOOL IS FUNDED BY THE YMCA AND HAS A SCHOOL FUND BUY YOUR OWN DAMN SNACKS FOR THE STUDENTS. THE COMPLAINTS GOES ON AND ON THIS IS JUST A FEW. I AM HAPPY MY KIDS ARE OUT OF THIS SCHOOL, MY OTHER KIDS WILL DEFINITELY NOT BE ATTENDING THIS SCHOOL AND IF ANYONE ASK ME I DO NOT RECOMMEND TIGER ACADEMY AT ALL. REVIEW WILL ALSO BE FORWARDED TO GOOGLE. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
