R. V. Daniels Elementary School

Summary:

R. V. Daniels Elementary School is a public elementary school in Jacksonville, Florida, serving 213 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. The school is part of the Duval school district, which is ranked 54th out of 68 districts in Florida and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

R. V. Daniels Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of African American students (81.69%) compared to the state and district averages, as well as a higher percentage of Asian students (10.8%). The school has shown mixed academic performance, outperforming the district and state in 5th-grade science and English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency, but underperforming in 3rd-grade ELA and math. However, the school has experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 11.6% in 2019-2020 to 31.5% in 2022-2023, which is notably higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 54.72% to 58.22% over the past three school years.

When compared to nearby schools, such as John E. Ford K-8 School, George Washington Carver Elementary, and Annie R. Morgan Elementary School, R. V. Daniels Elementary generally performs better in academic proficiency, particularly in 5th-grade science and ELA. However, the school struggles with higher chronic absenteeism rates and lower performance in 3rd-grade ELA and math. Despite the increased per-student spending at R. V. Daniels Elementary, the school's statewide ranking has declined, suggesting that the additional funding has not yet translated into improved academic outcomes.

Open Quote What ever they said in orientation or at school expo is not true. The title of the school is Gifted and Talented school but doesn't work that way. Principal is the boss. Most teachers left the school last year. Half of the school year, classes run by substitutes. I am not happy with duval magnate school system and with RV Daniels Elementary school. Close Quote

Open Quote R.V. Daniels is a hidden gem and recently became a dedicated gifted and academically talented magnet school. This was my child's first year at this school and I was highly impressed with the challenging curriculum, teachers, and small class size. When I asked my daughter if she liked this school more than her last one, she said, "I like this school more because the kids are nicer and they're like me...smart!" She no longer feels like the smartest kid in the class and is challenged, which I like to hear because it means she is finally being taught at her level! In addition, she was allowed to take part in various clubs and other creative projects throughout the entire year. Don't be fooled by the location of the school because it's an awesome starting point if you intend to send your children to gifted and academically talented middle and high schools. Highly recommended! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
